How to Care for a Handwoven Brocade Bag

Handwoven brocade is made to be lived with, but it responds best to calm, preventative care. The aim is to reduce avoidable stress on the fibres, shape and hardware while allowing the piece to become part of everyday life.

Because constructions differ, always follow instructions supplied with your particular piece. The guidance below is a conservative starting point.

Keep the surface dry

Avoid prolonged rain and high humidity. If the bag becomes lightly damp, blot with a clean cloth and air-dry naturally in a shaded, ventilated place. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator or strong sunlight.

Treat marks locally

For loose dust, use a very soft brush or dry lint-free cloth. Work gently in the direction of the weave. If a small mark requires moisture, test an inconspicuous area and blot with a barely damp white cloth. Do not saturate, scrub or apply household stain removers.

Do not place a structured bag in a washing machine or tumble dryer. Immersion can affect the woven surface, lining, internal structure and hardware differently.

Store with support

Empty the bag before long-term storage. Lightly support the interior with acid-free tissue or a soft undyed cloth, then keep it in a breathable dust bag away from sunlight and damp walls. Avoid sealed plastic for long periods.

Protect handles and hardware

Do not hang a filled bag by its handles for extended periods. Store chain straps inside a soft wrap so they do not press marks into the brocade. Wipe hardware with a dry cloth after use and keep perfume or hand cream away from the surface.

Thoughtful care is simple: keep the piece dry, clean it gently, store it with support and ask when uncertain. Signs of considerate use can become part of a handwoven object's story.
