What the highland geometric motif means

Diamonds, eight-point stars and stepped bands are the oldest vocabulary in southwest Chinese weaving — shapes that come out of the loom's own grid rather than out of drawing. Zhuang, Miao and neighbouring traditions each read them slightly differently, most often as sun, mountain and the eight directions.

How it is made

A narrow brocade band is gathered by hand over an elastic core and closed with a hidden seam, so the pleats sit unevenly on purpose.

Graphic and gender-neutral; the easiest motif to wear daily.

Care

Hand wash cool with a mild detergent, reshape while damp and dry flat away from heat. Do not wring the brocade band — the elastic core is sewn in.
