What the cloud-and-mist motif means

Layered cloud is the softest register in Zhuang weaving — a motif for clarity and for change that arrives gently. It is usually woven in close tones so the pattern only appears as the light moves.

How it is made

A single long brocade panel is woven, then squared and bound before the handles are set, which is why the pattern runs continuously across the front face.

Care

Wipe the brocade with a dry, soft cloth and treat the leather with a neutral cream twice a year. Store the bag upright and loosely filled so the woven panel keeps its shape.
