What the cloud-and-mist motif means

Layered cloud is the softest register in Zhuang weaving — a motif for clarity and for change that arrives gently. It is usually woven in close tones so the pattern only appears as the light moves.

How it is made

The brocade panel is woven first, then cut, edge-bound and assembled onto a leather body by hand, so the motif is positioned per bag rather than repeated to a print register.

Wearing it

Nearly tonal; the choice when you want texture rather than pattern.

Care

Wipe the brocade with a dry, soft cloth and treat the leather with a neutral cream twice a year. Keep the woven face out of prolonged direct sun, which fades plant-dyed threads faster than it fades leather.
